Regolith on Mars

Unconsolidated rock, wind-shaped dust, and future building material

Regolith is a layer of unconsolidated rocky material that lies above bedrock. On Mars, it's abraded material blown about by wind. It can be fashioned into building materials, such as bricks, or piled up to provide shielding from cosmic and solar radiation. It could be mixed with plastic resin or sulfur and fed into a 3-D printer to fabricate various parts and shapes.

If properly cleaned and amended with waste and fertilizer, the regolith can also be used for food production.
